MACEDONIAN WEDDING AT THE Sandalford Winees

We treasured every aspect of Dragica and David's Macedonian wedding, starting with the energetic morning filled with oro dances and joyous festivities, leading up to the solemn elegance of the ceremony at the Macedonian Orthodox Church of St. Nikola. The celebratory spirit carried on into the evening at the beautiful Sandalford Wines, where candlelight danced among breathtaking arrangements of white roses, skillfully designed by Luxe Events, while guests enjoyed a night of dancing in celebration.

An Overview of Macedonian Weddings in Perth
Macedonian weddings in Perth are vibrant celebrations filled with love, joy, music, dancing, and plenty of food and drinks.
These weddings span several days and are rich in rituals and traditions, making them both a test of endurance and a source of enjoyment for everyone involved. Attending a Macedonian wedding allows you to experience the joy shared by the bride, groom, and their families, friends, and relatives.
We’ve had the pleasure of capturing the essence of several Macedonian weddings across Perth and other Australian cities through our photographs. From the sunrise on the wedding day to the pre-wedding festivities, various customs are observed, some of which have ancient origins and may seem unusual to outsiders. However, these traditions add a unique flair to the celebrations.
Here’s an overview of what to anticipate at Macedonian weddings in Perth:
Key Highlights of Macedonian Weddings:
The shaving of the groom - This tradition stems from the belief that if a groom shaves himself, he might become too nervous and accidentally cut himself. Thus, his best man and friends take on this task, often adding humor by pretending to use outrageous tools like swords or axes.
The Bride Purchase Ceremony - An enduring tradition is the buying of the bride, rooted in the historical dowry system. Today, this is largely performed for entertainment. The groomsmen are warmly welcomed at the bride's home while negotiations occur, with the bride and her friends remaining in a separate room.
Breaking the Bread Ceremony - A round loaf of bread, representing the endless cycle of life, is baked by an unmarried girl from the bride’s family. During the wedding, this bread is broken over the couple’s heads, symbolizing wishful happiness in their marriage. The fathers of both the groom and bride engage in a friendly competition to break the bread, with the winner believed to have their child lead in the marriage.
Wine Drinking Custom - The groom partakes in a glass of wine in the bride’s home, with a golden coin hidden at the bottom of the glass, signifying prosperity for the couple.
Money-Filled Shoes - The bride's brother-in-law brings her bridal shoes, sized larger, and fills them with money, symbolizing abundance and good fortune.
Water Symbolism - Before heading to the ceremony, the bride kicks over a bowl or glass of water, representing a smooth and flowing life ahead.
Singing and Dancing - No Macedonian wedding is complete without lively singing and dancing. As the groom and his family enter the bride's home, festivities commence with traditional musicians playing folk songs. The couple and their guests participate in the dance known as ‘Oro’, linking hands in a circle, reflecting the unity of life and family.
Traditional weddings also include a spirited ‘Pig’ dance at receptions, where male guests showcase their masculinity by displaying wine bottles, knives, and roast pig.
In essence, Macedonian weddings in Perth beautifully blend authenticity and simplicity, creating unforgettable moments for everyone involved.
