List of Must-Have Gear for Wedding Photographers

A wedding day moves fast. Light shifts constantly, emotions unfold without warning and there is no opportunity to repeat moments. The gear you bring is what protects you from uncertainty and allows you to stay calm, creative and present. For photographers entering the world of weddings or experienced photographers looking to refine their kits, understanding what is truly essential makes a significant difference.

At Norman Yap Photography, our gear choices have been shaped over years of testing, refining and learning what supports our workflow and our editorial style. We do not believe in bringing everything. We believe in bringing the right things. This guide outlines the must-have equipment every wedding photographer should consider, along with insights from our own kit and why each piece matters.

Non-Negotiable Gear for Every Wedding

There are certain items we never arrive without. These are the tools that protect the client experience and ensure we can document a wedding with confidence.

  • Two camera bodies both with dual card slots for real-time backup
  • A 35mm lens our most versatile focal length for storytelling
  • An 85mm lens essential for portraits and moments requiring compression
  • A 24–70mm zoom optional but helpful in tight spaces or cultural ceremonies
  • One transmitter and one speedlight capable of both off-camera and on-camera flash

These essentials ensure you are never working without redundancy or creative control. Weddings are unpredictable, so the baseline kit must be robust, reliable and ready for anything.

The Camera Bodies Every Wedding Photographer Should Have

There is no requirement on brand. What matters most is having two matching camera bodies. When both cameras are identical, your muscle memory stays consistent. You do not waste time thinking about settings. Everything becomes instinctive and fluid, which is crucial on a wedding day.

We personally shoot with Nikon Z bodies, but the principle remains the same no matter what system you prefer. Dual card slots, fast focusing and reliable battery performance are the foundational features to look for.

The Lenses That Form Our Essential Wedding Kit

We use prime lenses because they encourage intention. They force movement, create consistency in style and prevent decision fatigue. Here is what lives in our kit.

  • 24mm f1.8 for environmental storytelling and dynamic wide shots
  • 35mm f1.2 our workhorse lens for almost every part of the day
  • 50mm f1.2 for portraiture with natural depth and softness
  • 85mm f1.8 for elegant compression and intimate emotion
  • 105mm macro for rings, jewellery and fine details
  • 105mm f1.4 specialty lens for signature portraiture with extreme depth of field control
  • 24–70mm f2.8 for fast-paced cultural ceremonies and crowded environments

Primes help us stay intentional. They limit choices in the best way and create a consistent visual language that supports our editorial look.

Lighting Gear We Depend On

Lighting determines the mood of a wedding gallery. Even when we embrace natural light, we always carry tools that allow us to shape or support the scene when needed.

  • Godox AD100 mounted on us throughout the day for instant light control
  • Godox AD200 for off-camera setups with more power
  • Godox V860 II for on-camera bouncing and fill
  • Zhiyun MOLUS X100 compact continuous lighting for cinematic portraits
  • Nanlite units for cultural weddings with large spaces or dynamic movement

This mix of flash and continuous lighting gives us flexibility. We can shift between dramatic silhouettes, soft romance or clean editorial tones within seconds.

Accessories Photographers Often Overlook

Some of the most important gear is not glamorous. These tools dramatically change how efficiently we move and how comfortable we stay throughout long days.

  • Spider Holster our most transformative accessory for weight distribution
  • Neck fan essential for summer weddings and outdoor ceremonies
  • Lowepro shoulder bag carrying spare batteries and lenses for quick access
  • Dual-camera setup Z9 on shoulder, Z8 on Spider holster

The Spider Holster alone changed our physical well-being. It shifted all the weight from our shoulders to our hips, eliminating the neck and back pain that many photographers accept as normal.

Gear That Helps Us Stay Fast, Organised and Calm

The best wedding photographers move with intention. Fast transitions, clean workflows and mental clarity come from having the right tools in the right place. Our shoulder bag allows us to keep batteries, cards and lenses ready without slowing down. The dual-camera setup eliminates lens-changing delays and lets us shift instantly between focal lengths.

Organisation builds confidence. Confidence allows creativity. The right gear supports both.

Redundancy: Our Safety Net for Weddings

We bring redundancy for everything. Extra lights, extra batteries, extra bodies and a third camera (Z6 III) ready if needed. We often shoot with second photographers to ensure multiple angles and perspectives are captured no matter what happens.

Weddings cannot be repeated. Reliable backups are essential, not optional.

Editorial Tools for Creative Portraits

We do not rely heavily on specialty effects. The tools we use for editorial portraits are practical and effective.

  • Angler 24 and 32 inch softboxes for fast, portable diffusion
  • 135cm Godox umbrella for soft, directional editorial lighting

These tools allow us to create studio-level light outdoors or indoors when needed. They require time to set up, so we use them intentionally for portraits that benefit from a more crafted look.

Final Thoughts

Every piece of gear in our kit was acquired through years of learning what works, what fails and what elevates our work. You do not need every item listed here. You can photograph a wedding beautifully with a single body and a 35mm lens. Gear grows with skill, confidence and experience.

If you are a photographer looking to refine your wedding kit or explore training, workshops and mentorships, Norman Yap Photography would be happy to guide you. The journey is long, but it is incredibly rewarding when you build a system that supports your artistry.
